Homemade Gesso Recipe

Posted on January 22, 2024January 22, 2024

Homemade Gesso Recipe:

Ingredients:

  1. White Glue (PVA Glue): 1 part
  2. White Paint: 1 part
  3. Red or Brown Paint Pigment: 1 part
  4. Calcium Carbonate (Marble Dust or Baking Soda): 2 parts
  5. Water: Enough to achieve desired consistency
  6. Container for Mixing
  7. Stirring Stick or Whisk

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Workspace:
    • Clear a clean and dry workspace for mixing your gesso.
  2. Measure Ingredients:
    • Determine the quantity of gesso you want to make and measure the ingredients accordingly. The standard ratio is 1 part glue, 1 part paint, and 2 parts calcium carbonate.
  3. Mix Glue and Paint:
    • In your mixing container, combine the white glue and white paint. Stir or whisk them together thoroughly until well-mixed.
  4. Add Calcium Carbonate:
    • Gradually add the calcium carbonate to the glue and paint mixture. Continue stirring as you add to avoid lumps. You can adjust the amount of calcium carbonate based on the desired thickness of your gesso.
  5. Adjust Consistency:
    • If the gesso is too thick, add a small amount of water and continue stirring until you achieve the desired consistency. If it’s too thin, add more calcium carbonate.
  6. Test and Adjust:
    • Test the gesso on a small surface to see if it applies smoothly and covers well. Adjust the mixture if needed.
  7. Store:
    • Transfer the homemade gesso to an airtight container for storage. Make sure to seal the container properly to prevent the gesso from drying out.
  8. Application:
    • Apply the gesso to your art surface using a brush. Allow it to dry completely before applying additional coats or starting your painting.

Tips:

  • Experiment with the ratio of ingredients to achieve the texture and coverage you prefer.
  • You can tint the gesso by adding a small amount of acrylic paint to the mixture if you want a colored base.

This DIY gesso recipe provides an affordable alternative to store-bought gesso and allows you to customize the texture and color according to your preferences.
